The inaugural 2008 Indian Premier League champions Rajasthan Royals have kicked off their IPL 2020 campaign with two consecutive victories, and undoubtedly one of the biggest factors behind the franchise’s current success in the UAE is the destructive in-form Sanju Samson. The batsman has struck two back to back half-centuries against both CSK and KXIP, and reveals the secret behind his stellar knocks.
Sanju Samson has been a part of Rajasthan Royals since 2018. He scored a scintillating 74-off-32 in their IPL 2020 opening match against Chennai and struck a whopping nine sixes.
The Kerala cricket team stalwart repeated another stellar performance yesternight against Punjab, scoring an unbelievable 42-ball-85, and struck the ball out of the park seven times. He won the player of the match award in both games.
Following the record chase victory against KXIP, Samson revealed to Star the way he regained his mesmerising form.
Did a bit of soul-searching: The secret behind Sanju Samson’s current destructive avatar
Sanju Samson’s past endeavours in the Indian cricket team have been burdensome. Even though he has landed remarkable knocks in former IPL seasons, the 25-year-old from Thiruvananthapuram has struggled to find international call-ups and has only made four appearances for the Men in Blue in T20Is.
However, some contemplation and looking into his soul helped the batsman.
“I think I have been hitting it well for the last one year. So I’m in the right frame of mind. I can see a change in my game and my fitness,” Samson said after the match last night.
“I was really fed up of myself last year. I had been trying very hard but things were not happening,” Samson continued, “Then I really went back to myself, did a bit of soul-searching and I really asked myself lots of different questions. Like, ‘What do I want to achieve in my life?’ and ‘Where do I want to reach until my cricket career finishes?’”
Samson has scored a total of 2368 runs across 95 IPL matches, with a 133.78 strike rate. In the ongoing tournament, the batsman’s numbers are skyrocketing, as he is already on an astounding 214.86 SR and has struck a total of sixteen sixes and five fours.
“I decided that I have ten more years to play this wonderful game, so I decided to just give my everything towards cricket and nothing else. My family, friends and everyone is really supportive and I’m really happy that I’m giving my whole energy towards cricket – and it’s giving back to me,” he added.
Its in my genes: Samson credits his father for the power behind his sixes
Speaking about his strength with the bat, the Keralite attributed his genes, addressing that he derived the power behind his shots from his father.
“I believe that it’s in my genes. My father is a very powerful man so I think I also get the same strength,” Samson went on, “I have really worked hard on my fitness. I have understood that my game is all about power, so I have invested a lot of time in developing my muscles and all those things, so I’m very happy that it’s coming out nicely.”
Rajasthan Royals will take on Kolkata Knight Riders next on 30th September at the Dubai International Stadium.
