Swashbuckling India opener Smriti Mandhana has supported the maiden women’s edition of Red Bull Campus Cricket, which will be played next year, citing that it will be a great boost for the game in the country as well. The tournament will take place across four zones – north, south, east and west and the winners of the zonal editions will play in the national finals.
“I’m very happy that Red Bull Campus Cricket will be conducting a women’s edition next year. It will be a great platform for Indian women who want to play cricket professionally,” Mandhana was quoted as saying in a media release issued here on Thursday.
“Many players have gotten selected for their state teams and played for national teams after playing Red Bull Campus Cricket. Players like KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, Manan Vohra, Anukul Roy and others have all played Red Bull Campus Cricket.”
“To have a women’s edition will be a great boost for women’s cricket in India,” Smriti Mandhana further added.
However, the tournament will give the players a chance to play for their college teams and will help them to represent their country in the world finals as well. Meanwhile, India have produced many quality players like – Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, Poonam Yadav, Jhulan Goswami, Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and many more.
Mumbai-born and Sangli-raised, Smriti made her debut in 2013 and came in the limelight with her swashbuckling knock against England in the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. She selected in Maharashtra’s Under-15 team at the age of nine and Maharashtra Under-19 team at 11 as well.
Recently Smriti Mandhana led the Trailblazers to their maiden Women’s T20 Challenge trophy. In the final, Trailblazers successfully restricted Supernovas within a below-par while defending a total of 118 on the back of a brilliant bowling show and beat the two-time champions Supernovas by 16 runs as well.
The game was a low-scoring clash owing to a slow surface and only Trailblazers captain Smriti Mandhana (68 off 49) could manage to score a fifty. Apart from her, both the side struggled to open their arms. Jemimah too failed to leave her mark in the tournament.
