Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hasn’t had the best of starts to the 2018-19 season. Two losses in the opening three games has resulted in the special one coming under a lot of fire from critics and fans. Despite the shaky start, executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has decided to give Mourinho ample time and opportunity to turn the club’s fortunes around.
United were defeated 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspurs in the final Premier League game for the month of August, following an equally dismal showing at the 3-2 loss away to Brighton and Hove Albion. Mourinho has been criticised throughout his United run for playing slow and defensive football, which doesn’t reflect the kind of football the club is famous for, yet in the first half of the game against Tottenham, United seemed to have a purpose about their game, creating several chances in the opposition penalty box but failing to convert any, including an open goal miss by Romelu Lukaku. They started the second half in similar fashion but two quickfire goal by the London club completely disoriented the mentality and the structure of the red devils, and a third one towards the end of the match sealed the deal for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
The loss wasn’t the least of Mourinho’s problems. During the post match press conference, he made a very bizarre scene as he brought up the past glories of his Premier League career, and it seemed like he had lost his touch with United after a fruitful two seasons with them.
Despite there being rumours of a row between Woodward and Mourinho, the former is not willing to sack the special one just yet, to give him time to turn the club’s fortunes around. Parallels have been drawn after this decision with Mourinho’s 2015-16 season with Chelsea where he also had a poor showing and was sacked by the club mid season.
Max Allegri, Didier Deschamps and Leonardo Jardim are some of the replacements the club might look into if the worst comes to pass but as of now, the special one’s immediate future is safe at Old Trafford.
