Sumit Nagal qualifies for the main draw of the Australian Open 2024

Sumit Nagal, 26, who last appeared in a Grand Slam back in 2021 at the same Australian Open is all set to make a comeback to the mega event. Nagal defeated Alex Molcan of Slovakia(6-4, 6-5) in the final round on Friday to secure a spot in the main draw which starts on 14th January.

Earlier, Sumit Nagal defated Geoffrey Blancaneaux of Russia(6-3, 7-5) and Australian Edward Winter(6-3, 6-2) in consecutive sets in the first two rounds of the qualifiers. Nagal, who is 139th in Singles World rankings, will appear in his fourth Grand Slam. Previously, Nagal successfully reached the main round of the US Open in 2019 and 2020.

Sumit Nagal impress at Australian Open

In the final round against Alex Molcan, Sumit Nagal dominated the initial phase by winning 3 straight games of 1st set. But the Slovakian made an impressive comeback by winning the next 3 and equaled with 3-3. Nagal won next game and Molcan equaled again at 4-4. But Sumit dominated the next two games, especially the 6th to take the set.

In the second set, Molcan gave tough fight to Nagal as both the players won 3-3 in the first six games. Sumit was seen struggling and also took a medical timeout during the set. Despite of this, Nagal won the next two games and eventually won the set with 6-4.

Sumit Nagal will appear in the first round of the main draw on 14th January
