Manchester United are ready to make Mike Phelan the technical director at Old Trafford. Head of corporate development Matt Judge had led the discussions with Phelan, but the exact details of the contract are yet to be decided upon.
Phelan has been in the coaching staff since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over, and the Red Devils want to offer him a higher role. Phelan has contributed well in the coaching role, and both the players and Solskjaer have benefitted as a result. He has previously held such a role, at Central Coast Mariners in Australia.
Phelan’s jump will make Michael Carrick the assistant manager, which is bound to be a popular decision. Carrick’s cool persona has been useful in the United dugout, and this will further enhance his responsibilities. Kieran McKenna – who has been a part of the coaching staff- will also get a new contract.
United are in severe need of changes, and Solskjaer will look to make some big decisions in the summer. Numerous players could be out, and he will look to recruit some big names. Phelan will provide his judgement from the role of technical director.
United lost to Everton last weekend, and they will continue their top-four charge when they host Manchester City at Old Trafford this week.
