The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has made a significant decision concerning the governance of wrestling in India. On March 18, 2024, the IOA announced the dissolution of the ad hoc committee that had been overseeing operations at the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

The ad hoc committee was established to manage the WFI’s activities during a period when the federation was under suspension by the United World Wrestling. This suspension necessitated the creation of an interim body to ensure the smooth functioning of wrestling activities in India.

IOA dissolute Wrestling’s Ad hoc committee

During its tenure, the ad hoc committee was responsible for overseeing the selection trials for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games 2024. The committee’s chairman, Bhupender Singh Bajwa, had previously stated that all three members of the IOA-constituted panel had decided to allow Vinesh to compete in two categories.

The IOA’s decision to dissolve the ad hoc committee comes in light of the lifting of the ban on the WFI by the United World Wrestling. With the successful completion of the selection trials overseen by the ad hoc committee, the IOA deemed it unnecessary to continue running the WFI’s activities through this interim body.

This move signals a return to normalcy and stability for Indian wrestling, allowing the WFI to resume its operations under its regular governance structure. The decision reflects a vote of confidence in the WFI’s ability to manage its affairs independently once again.

With the ban lifted and the completion of selection trials, the WFI can now focus on its core responsibilities of promoting and organizing wrestling events in the country. This development is likely to bring relief to stakeholders within the wrestling community and pave the way for a renewed focus on the development and advancement of wrestling in India.

Overall, the dissolution of the ad hoc panel marks a positive step forward for Indian wrestling, signalling a return to normalcy and the resumption of regular administrative functions within the WFI. As the WFI resumes its operations, the focus will now shift to the performance of the Indian wrestling team in the upcoming Paris Olympic Games 2024.
