The Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) league, a premier table tennis competition in India, has announced the addition of a new team, the Ahmedabad SG Pipers, for its 2024 season. This marks a significant expansion of the league, which until 2023 was contested by six teams.

Ahmedabad will be the eighth team in Ultimate Table Tennis

The Ahmedabad SG Pipers, owned by SG Sports and Entertainment Pvt. Ltd (SGSE), will represent the city of Ahmedabad. The sports arm of APL Apollo Group, SGSE, is backed by twelve-time tennis Grand Slam champion Mahesh Bhupathi, who will serve as the CEO.

Bhupathi’s involvement in the Ultimate Table Tennis league is expected to bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the team and the league. In a statement, Bhupathi expressed excitement about being part of the sport’s growth and is confident that the presence of the Ahmedabad SG Pipers will elevate the upcoming edition of the league.

“Ultimate Table Tennis is the premier table tennis competition in the nation and they can showcase both homegrown and international talent at the elite level. We at SGSE are excited that we have the opportunity to participate in the growth of the sport. I am sure the presence of our team – Ahmedabad will make the upcoming edition of the league more competitive and entertaining,” said CEO, SGSE Mahesh Bhupathi.

The Ahmedabad SG Pipers will join the Jaipur Patriots, another new entrant who joined UTT last year, in making their debut in the upcoming season. This expansion marks an exciting chapter in the league’s growth as it will help spread the game to new regions.

“We are delighted to welcome SGSE and the APL Apollo Group to the UTT family. The success of Indian table tennis stars on the international circuit and the popularity of UTT among players and fans has only made the league stronger over the years. UTT is committed to promoting the game of table tennis and this expansion marks an exciting chapter in the league’s growth as it will help us spread the game to a new region,” UTT co-promoters Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani said in a joint comment.

Until the 2023 edition, the tournament was contested by six teams – Bengaluru Smashers, Chennai Lions, Dabang Delhi TTC, Goa Challengers, Puneri Paltan Table Tennis, and U Mumba TT. The last edition saw the Goa Challengers being crowned as the champions.

The addition of the Ahmedabad SG Pipers and the Jaipur Patriots to the UTT roster is expected to make the league more competitive and entertaining. The UTT 2024 is likely to take place during the July-August months, like the previous edition of the tournament.
