The city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan is all set to host the Asian Cup Armwrestling tournamnent taking place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from 17th November to 25th November. The Asian Cup is being sanctioned by the Asian Armwrestling Federation.
The Asian Cup will also see Top Indian Armwrestlers competing in this tournament. The Sports India Show had the opportunity to chat with the president of People’s Armwrestling Federation India, Mrs Preeti Jhangiani.
“The Asian Cup is a very grand tournament which is taking place in the beautiful city of Samarkand, which is known to be extremely beautiful and has great hospitality and we are really looking forward to taking Team India there. There are very high hopes from all the Indian athletes now after the great success at the World Championship. Team India is being looked at as a very formidable force and very proud once again to be leading the Indian contingent with PAFI for the Asian Cup 2023,” Mrs Preeti Jhangiani said.
General Secretary of PAFI, Mr Laxman Singh Bhandari also stated that Team India will be sending a strong contingent to the Asian Cup taking place in Samarkand.
“We are taking with us a very strong team for the Asian Cup taking place in Samarkand. We are hopeful of a strong showing,” Laxman Bhandari said.
Indian Armwrestlers have improved at the international level
Indian Armwrestlers have been doing very well at the international level and thanks to the national federation i.e PAFI, the Armwrestlers now receive a much higher level of attention.
In September 2023, the Indian contingent which went to compete in the 44th World Armwrestling Championship 2023 and 25th PARA Armwrestling Championship, which was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, won a total of 11 Medals (3 Gold, 6 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals).
The sub-junior competitor Abhas Rana took home the gold in both the left and right hands. Fessy George, Grand Master, earned two silver medals in the right and right hand categories. Latha G. Nair, Grand Master (80 kg), won two silver medals in the left and right hand category. Thresiamma MM, Grand Master, won two silver medals in the left and right hand category.
People’s Armwrestling Federation India (PAFI) is the sole Indian organisation with affiliation to the Asian Armwrestling Federation (AAF) and World Armwrestling Federation (WAF).
