A total of 15 weightlifters, comprising eight men and seven women, have been selected to represent India at the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games, set to take place from 28th July 28 to 8th August in Birmingham. The lifters will be taking part in 15 out of the 16 weight categories at the CWG.

The male lifters to be the part of the Indian contingent are- Sanket Sargar (55kg), Gururaja (61kg), Jeremy Lalrinnunga (67kg), Achinta Sheuli (73kg), Ajay Singh (81kg), Vikas Thakur (96kg), Lovepreet Singh (109kg), Gurdeep Singh (+109kg), and Mirabai Chanu (49kg), Bindyarani Devi (55kg), Popy Hazarika (59kg), Harjinder Kaur (71kg), Punam Yadav (76kg), B.N. Usha (87kg), Purnima Pandey (+87kg) are the female counterparts making the cut. 64 kg is the only weight class with no participation from India.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Achinta Sheuli and Ajay Singh all had direct entries as Commonwealth champions, along with Purnima Pandey’s CWG gold granting her entry into the women’s +87kg event. Other lifters earned their berths through rankings.

The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) had originally planned Mirabai Chanu, the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist to compete in the 55 kg category, along with moving Jhilli Dalabehera to the 49 kg, which would have allowed Bindyarani Devi and Popy Hazarika’s participation in the 64 kg event.

However, the plan did not facilitate and Mirabai was fielded in the women’s 49 kg category, along with Bindyarani and Popy in the 55 kg and 59 kg categories respectively.

The contingent will be managed by Anande Gowda, and the lifters will be accompanied by four coaches- Vijay Sharma, Pramod Kumar Sharma, Sandip Kumar and Dathan A.P.
