UEFA Champions League – Round of 16

Liverpool FC vs Bayern Munich :

This season Bayern Munich held off Ajax to finish first in Group E while Liverpool needed a match day six win against Napoli to claim second place behind Paris Saint-Germain in Group C.

Liverpool FC and Bayern Munich have five titles to their name – Liverpool’s last triumph coming in 2005 and Bayern’s in 2013. Both suffered recent disappointments as The English club were beaten by Real Madrid in last season’s final, while The Germans have lost in the semi-finals in four of the last five years, including last season’s defeat by Real Madrid.

Liverpool will be without star defender Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ahead of Tuesday’s game while Bayern Munich will be without Thomas Muller and Corentin Tolisso due to suspension and injury respectively.

Olympique Lyonnaise vs FC Barcelona :

Lyon are in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds for the first time in seven seasons, but to progress further they must overcome a Barcelona side who have been eliminated only twice at this juncture of the competition and also are unbeaten against the French club.

Lyon’s home record in round of 16 matches is W5 D3 L1 and they have not won an away game at this stage since 2005/06, while Barcelona are without a win in their last five away knockout games (D1 L4), since a 2-0 victory at Arsenal in the 2015/16 round of 16.

Lyon have some injury concerns for this midweek tie with Amine Gouri, Rafael and Ousseynou Ndiaye set to be left out while fitness concerns over Denayer and Ndombele still prevail. Barcelona have their own injury problems as Rafinha, Cillessen and Vermalen all won’t be available, fortunately, Samuel Umtiti has returned after recovering from his recent long term injury.

Atletico Madrid vs Juventus:

Atletico Madrid and Juventus have reached the final twice in the past five seasons, Atlético losing to neighbours Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016 whereas Juventus were beaten by Barcelona in 2015 and by Real Madrid in 2017.

Atletico had to settle for second best behind Borussia Dortmund in Group A while Juventus took control of Group H by winning their first three fixtures, including a 2-0 victory at Valencia and a 1-0 success at Manchester United.

Both teams are known for their impeccable defensive structure, which is witnessed by the fact that no team has conceded fewer goals than them in their respective leagues. Juventus have conceded just 15 goals in 23 league games, whereas Atletico have conceded 17 from 24 league matches.

FC Schalke 04 vs Manchester City FC:

Schalke’s last three UEFA Champions League campaigns have all ended in the round of 16 while Manchester City FC are in the knockout stages for sixth year in a row and have won two of their last three round of 16 ties.

The German club are without a win in their last five games against English sides (D2 L3), since a 2-0 victory at Arsenal in October 2012. Their most recent game with Chelsea in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League group stages resulted in a 5-0 loss, equalling their heaviest European defeat.

There are a couple players to watch in this match. First is Manchester City star Leroy Sane, who is facing his boyhood club for the first time since leaving Schalke 04 in 2016 for a reported transfer fee of over $42 million. On the other side, 18-year-old Rabbi Matondo could make his Champions League debut for Schalke 04 after being transferred from Manchester City for a reported fee of over $12 million just last month.
