In a thrilling encounter, Mumbai City FC produced one of the most iconic comebacks in the history of Indian football by defeating FC Goa 3-2 in the first leg of the semi-final of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023/24.

Mumbai City FC wins in a dramatic fashion

The hosts, FC Goa, took an early lead in the 16th minute with right-winger Boris Thangjam scoring the first goal. Their lead was doubled in the second half when star midfielder Brandon Fernandes found the back of the net in the 56th minute.

However, Mumbai City FC had different plans. They went on a scoring spree in injury time, turning the tide in their favour. Lallianzuala Chhangte scored a brace, and Vikram Singh added another goal to their tally. This stunning comeback silenced the jam-packed Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao.

No team had come from 0-2 down to win a game in the ISL playoffs. No team had scored three goals in minutes 90 or later in the history of the league. This marks the first instance where a team had scored multiple goals in the injury time of the second half of the ISL playoffs. 22 out of 33 matches in the ISL playoffs had been won by the home team. But the Lallianzuala Chhangte-inspired Mumbai shattered all these records in just six minutes.

With this victory, Mumbai City FC will go into their home leg with a one-goal lead. Avoiding a defeat in the next match will guarantee them a place in the final.

This match was a perfect example of why football is often referred to as a game of two halves. Mumbai City FC’s remarkable comeback against FC Goa will be remembered as one of the most exciting matches in the history of the Indian Super League.
