Rishabh Pant etched his name into the record books on Day 4 of the first Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, becoming the fastest Indian wicketkeeper to score 2,500 Test runs. Pant achieved this milestone in just 62 innings, surpassing the previous record held by former captain MS Dhoni, who reached the landmark in 69 innings. Farokh Engineer, another legendary figure in Indian cricket, had previously held the record with 82 innings.
Rishabh Pant’s Remarkable Achievement
Pant’s milestone came during a crucial phase of the match, as India mounted a spirited fightback, reaching 344/3 at lunch on Day 4. Pant played a key role in this resurgence, scoring an aggressive 53 off 56 balls. His innings helped stabilize the Indian innings after an early wobble, combining with Sarfaraz Khan, who scored his maiden Test century.
Overcoming Adversity
Despite missing Day 3 due to a knee injury sustained while keeping wickets, Pant showed no signs of discomfort at the crease. He made a cautious start but soon unleashed his attacking flair, showcasing his resilience and determination to contribute to the team’s cause.

The 26-year-old Pant’s rapid rise in the Test format has been a major talking point in Indian cricket. Since making his debut in 2018, he has quickly established himself as a match-winner, especially in overseas conditions, with notable innings in Australia and England. His aggressive batting style, coupled with an ever-improving glovework behind the stumps, has drawn comparisons with Dhoni, but Pant has consistently carved out his own legacy.
