Indian javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra has gained immense popularity since winning India’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics at the Tokyo Olympics. However, he maintains a grounded perspective, especially when it comes to cricket.
Neeraj Chopra’s thoughts comparing himself with Cricket Stars
In an interview, Neeraj expressed that he never attempts to compare himself with cricket legends like Virat Kohli or MS Dhoni. He acknowledges the reality that cricket holds a special place in India, with unparalleled attention and recognition for cricketers. Neeraj’s humility shines through as he recognizes the stark difference in his own popularity compared to that of a cricketer.
“Even while growing up, I always knew that cricket was on another level, and the attention a cricketer received would always be more than that of an athlete playing any other sport. But that didn’t mean I had no option but to choose cricket. I have always wanted to pursue javelin as it is the sport I like and had no idea that I would end up winning an Olympic gold medal. I picked up the sport because I loved it,” Chopra told SportStar.
Growing up, Neeraj always knew that cricket occupied a different level of prominence. Yet, his passion lay elsewhere—specifically in javelin throw. He pursued the sport he loved, never imagining that he would eventually clinch an Olympic gold medal. His dedication paid off, and he became India’s only track and field Olympic champion.
“I never tried to compare myself with the likes of Virat Kohli or MS Dhoni because I’m very well aware of the reality of what I am in India. Yes, obviously, after the Olympics, people recognize me a lot more, but I know there is a stark difference in my popularity compared to that of a cricketer. Cricket is played in every single alley in the country. It’s not like people practise javelin throw in the same way,” he added.

While Neeraj’s fame has surged after the Olympics, he remains realistic about his position in India. Cricket is played in every nook and cranny of the country, whereas javelin throw doesn’t enjoy the same widespread practice. Neeraj’s focus remains on his sport, and he appreciates the recognition he receives without drawing comparisons to cricket stars.
As he heads into the Paris Olympics 2024, where he will lead India’s 29-member athletics team, Neeraj Chopra aims to defend his crown. His historic gold medal throw of 87.58 meters in Tokyo set the stage for his continued pursuit of excellence.
