In a significant move to boost sports culture in India, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced on Wednesday that medal winners in all Khelo India competitions will now be eligible for government jobs. This groundbreaking step is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of nurturing talent at the grassroots level and turning sports into a lucrative and viable career option.
Khelo India Athletes Finds a Gateway to Government Jobs
The Khelo India initiative, first organized in 2018, was part of the Modi government’s efforts to revive sports culture at the grassroots level. The program has been instrumental in identifying and nurturing young talent across the country. With this new announcement, medal winners and those finishing up to third position in the Khelo India Youth Games, Winter Games, Para Games, and University Games are now eligible for recruitment, promotion, and other incentives in the central government.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), in consultation with the sports ministry, has made progressive revisions to the eligibility criteria for sportspersons seeking government jobs. This move extends eligibility to medal winners from the Khelo India Games, ensuring inclusivity across various sports.

The order of preference for extending incentives, including government jobs, has also been revised. Candidates who have represented the country in an international competition will continue to be the first preference, followed by those who have represented a state/UT in senior or junior-level national championships organized by national sports federations recognized by the sports ministry or in national games organized by the Indian Olympics Association.
Medal winners or those finishing up to third in University Games are listed as the third preference, and those winning medals or finishing up to third in Youth Games, Winter Games or Para Games are listed as the fourth preference.
This move is expected to encourage more young athletes to participate in the Khelo India Games, knowing that their achievements can secure them a stable future in government service. It also underscores the government’s commitment to promoting sports and recognizing the hard work and dedication of young athletes.
