Former Indian cricketer and commentator Laxman Sivaramakrishnan recently made a bold remark about Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s response to his congratulatory messages. This incident occurred just a day before Ashwin was set to play his 100th Test match.

Sivaramakrishnan claimed that Ashwin disrespected him by cutting off his calls and ignoring his messages when he tried to convey his well-wishes ahead of the landmark occasion. He expressed his frustration on social media, stating, “Tried calling him a few times to wish him for his 100th Test. Just cut off my call. Sent him a message, no reply. That’s the respect we former cricketers get”.

This controversy cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory moment for Ashwin and Indian cricket. Online users resurfaced Sivaramakrishnan’s previous critical comments about Ashwin, which date back to October 2022. Back then, the former spinner had criticized Ashwin’s bowling action and fielding abilities, labelling him as “unfit” and a “liability”.

However, Sivaramakrishnan defended himself by clarifying that his intentions were merely to provide constructive criticism regarding Ashwin’s bowling action. He stated, “Respect comes only from cultured people. Btw, I was earlier tweeting about a minor correction in his action and not criticizing him. If only people understood”.

In an unexpected turn of events, Sivaramakrishnan later revealed that he received a phone call from Ashwin himself. During this conversation, Ashwin reportedly discussed his bowling action with Sivaramakrishnan. The former cricketer also stated that Ashwin expressed his shock at the vitriolic response from online trolls towards Sivaramakrishnan’s comments.
