The Olympic Games, a global celebration of athleticism, camaraderie, and human spirit, have long captured the imagination of nations. Recently, two countries—Egypt and India—have signalled their interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics. Let’s delve into their aspirations and what this means for the sporting world.
The bidding war gets tight with Eygpt’s entry for the 2036 Olympics
Egypt, with its rich history and vibrant culture, aims to make history by hosting the first successful African bid for the Olympics. The country has invested billions in building state-of-the-art facilities, stadiums, and sports complexes. Their growing infrastructure is a testament to their commitment.
The Egypt International Olympic City complex, located in the new administrative capital east of Cairo, boasts a 93,900-capacity national stadium and 21 other sports facilities. Cairo previously made an unsuccessful bid for the 2008 Olympics, but now they’re back, determined to bring the Games to Africa.
India, the world’s second-most populous country, has never hosted the Olympics. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared that it’s time to turn their age-old dream into reality. The 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi showcased India’s ability to organize a major sporting event. Now, they set their sights on the Olympics.
Modi’s promise to “leave no stone unturned” reflects India’s determination. They seek collaboration and support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Beyond medals, India believes in winning hearts through sports—a sentiment that resonates with the Olympic spirit.
Mustapha Berraf, head of the African National Olympic Committees Association (ANOCA), emphasizes Africa’s potential. South Africa’s Cape Town is also considering an Olympic bid. Berraf predicts that Africa will likely host the Games in 2040. Infrastructure remains crucial—roads, airports, and reliable facilities. Egypt’s existing potential positions them well.

Beyond Egypt and India, other countries are in the race. Mexico and Indonesia have officially expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics. Poland, never having hosted an Olympic Games, hopes to stage the event.
Paris (2024), Los Angeles (2028), and Brisbane (2032) have their dates set, but the 2036 host remains up for grabs.
