Inclusion of Boxing in LA Olympics 2028: A Call for Federations to Join World Boxing

The world of boxing stands at a crucial juncture, with the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 hanging in the balance. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has not yet confirmed boxing’s place in the upcoming games. However, the president of World Boxing, Boris van der Vorst, believes there’s a clear path forward: national boxing federations must unite and join World Boxing.

IOC recognizes World Boxing as the statutory body

The recent boxing event at the Paris Olympics was overseen directly by the IOC. This came after the IOC stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of its status as the global governing body due to governance and financial issues.

To secure boxing’s inclusion in the LA Olympics 2028, national boxing federations must act swiftly. Their only effective action is to join World Boxing. The IOC has made it clear that a trusted and reliable international federation (IF) is essential for boxing’s restoration to the Olympic program.

World Boxing, established in 2023, aims to create a sustainable and inclusive sporting structure. Their focus includes strong governance, transparent financial management, and ensuring fair competition. While currently not recognized by the IOC, World Boxing is determined to grow its membership and become a reliable IF.

IOC President Thomas Bach stated that a decision on boxing’s inclusion in the LA Olympics must be made by 2025. The stakes are high, and the future of boxing on the Olympic stage hangs in the balance.

Van der Vorst extends an invitation to all national federations that care about their boxers and the sport’s future. He urges them to join World Boxing promptly, collaborate, and work towards a better future for boxing.
