The Indian teenager Dhinidhi Desinghu surprised everyone on Wednesday by producing a record-breaking swim to clock the ‘Best Indian Time’ in the girl’s 100m freestyle event on her way to a fourth-place finish at the 11th Asian Age Group Aquatics Championships in the Philippines.

By competing in the ‘C’ category at the Aquatics Championships, the 14-year-old broke Kenisha Gupta’s previous record of 57.35s by a narrow .02 seconds.

Junior swimmers who are 16 to 17 years old compete in the ‘B’ events while 14 to 15-year-olds participate in the ‘C’ category.

In swimming, national record timings are those achieved at the National Aquatic Championships. The times recorded in other meets are called the ‘best Indian time’.

Dhinidhi Desinghu’s outbeat previous records

Dhindhi not only recorded the best Indian time but with her performance, she even surpassed the Olympian Maana Patel (58.42s) and 21-year-old Shivangi Sarma (59.05s).

Dhinidhi Desinghu hails from Bengaluru and has already made a name for herself in the Indian swimming circuit. She also represented India at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year. Dhinidhi won as many as 7 gold medals at the National games last year.
