Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has extended his present contract with Portuguese side FC Porto, and said that he wishes to retire at the Portuguese capital if possible. The Primeira Liga champions’ president added that the Spaniard was among the world’s best and that they hope to carry on the way they are.
Casillas moved to Porto in the summer of 2015 following a 17-year stay at Real Madrid, after his parents claimed Real president Florentino Perez forced him out of the Bernabeu, while others including Barcelona great Xavi also criticizing his exit from the Spanish capital.
Casillas won the Primeira Liga with Porto last term, and decided to extend his stay in the Portuguese capital ahead of the expiry of his initial 2-year deal. However, the club has not disclosed the duration of extended stay.
He said:
“Today is a very special day. I feel at home in this club. I want to stay here until I finish my career as a footballer.
“After that, frankly, I don’t know, but I hope I’m always tied to football.”
Casillas, who made 149 appearances for Porto since his arrival, added that the club was his primary focus now, while president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa continued that the Spain international was “among the extraordinary goalkeepers that FC Porto always had.”
Porto booked a Champions League quarter final spot against Premier League leaders Liverpool, while they sit in the second place in the Liga, joint with leaders Benfica, with 63 points apiece.
