Despite a poor outing in his debut game on Thursday, where India itself collapsed for 92, Sunil Gavaskar feels that Shubman Gill is the future of Indian cricket.

Following the option to rest Virat Kohli for the final two games vs New Zealand, Shubman Gill made his much awaited debut as he replaced the skipper for the 4th ODI. But unfortunately it came in one of the worst defeats as India were bundled out for 92 following Boult’s tremendous spell of 5/21.
19 year old Gill, who walked out to bat after the fall of Rohit Sharma’s wicket did little to the cause as he could manage only 9 runs against the rampant Kiwi attack.
Despite such a debut game where Gill couldn’t leave a mark, former opener Sunil Gavaskar feels that there is a bright future in store for Gill.
“Well, for whatever little time he was there, he was a little bit tense, nervous. That’s understandable because he is playing for the country for the first time,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
“Even then, when Boult was swinging the ball, he was able to get in line, yes… he was hit by the short ball as well. I think this guy’s got a future, you have got to be patient with him.
“My feeling is that they’ll probably have Dhoni coming in place of Karthik. Other changes will be based on the conditions in Wellington. I don’t see too many changes though. I am sure Shubman Gill will get another opportunity,” Gavaskar said.
Former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said Gill had the technique needed to do well in international cricket.
“Gill does have the technique. On a surface that had plenty of bounce, he had the ability to punch off the back foot. He picked up the length nicely. He just looks like he’s got a lot of time.
“Whenever you look at a quality player, you look at how they play the best bowlers. When Trent Boult was swinging the ball, very difficult conditions, probably quite foreign to something Gill will be used to, he showed enough glimpses to say ‘look he is the guy we have got to invest in’.”
