Newly appointed Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani revealed the real reason behind Rishabh Pant’s departure from the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Contrary to earlier speculations that Pant left due to financial reasons, Badani clarified that Pant chose to test the market rather than accept the highest cap for retained players, which was set at Rs 18 crore.

Badani on Rishabh Pant’s retention

Pant’s decision to enter the auction paid off spectacularly when he was bought by the Lucknow Super Giants for a record-breaking Rs 27 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history. Badani mentioned that despite the Capitals’ efforts to retain Pant, including using the Right to Match card at Rs 20.25 crore, the bidding war pushed the price beyond their budget.

“Yes (Delhi Capitals were interested in retaining him). He said he wanted to go to the auction and test the mark. He said he had a feeling that there was a chance he would get more money than the highest cap for retained players, which is Rs 18 crore.

“And, at the end of the day, he felt he was worth more. And the market said the same thing. He got Rs 27 crore. Good for him. He is a very good player. We will obviously miss him. But, life goes on,” he added.

Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal had previously stated that Pant’s departure was due to differing philosophies on how to operate the team, but Badani’s comments suggest that Pant was confident he could fetch a higher price in the auction. Pant himself denied that money was the primary factor, but Badani’s account indicates that Pant’s ambition to maximize his market value played a significant role in his decision.

The departure of Pant, who had been a key player and captain for the Capitals, marks the end of an era for the franchise. However, the acquisition of KL Rahul as his replacement signals a new chapter for the team.. Badani expressed confidence in Rahul’s ability to bring stability and leadership to the team, hoping to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season.

Pant’s move to Lucknow Super Giants is seen as a win-win situation for both parties, with Pant achieving a significant financial milestone and the Super Giants securing a top-tier player for their lineup. As the IPL 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Pant to see how he performs with his new team and whether he can continue to justify his record-breaking price tag.
