Barcelona captain and star player Lionel Messi was left behind after their shocking defeat to Liverpool. The midfielder was held back by anti-doping testers while the rest of his mates left in the team bus.
FC Barcelona and their captain Lionel Messi had a forgettable night of their lives as the side surrendered a 3 goal lead in the 2nd leg to lose the tie 4-3. Things got even worse when Messi was held back at Anfield while other players left in the team bus.
Messi was held back by the anti-doping testers after the conclusion of the match. Since the process took a long time, the team bus did not wait for their captain but left early. Messi then had to make his own arrangements to join with the rest of the squad at the John Lennon Airport.
Fans who waited to catch a glimpse of Messi at the airport did not hesitate to take a dig at their star after he and his side failed to hold on to comfortable lead. Messi was then accompanied by security guards as some fans came to approach him aggressively.
While Messi did not address the media following the defeat, his teammate Sergio Busquets spoke to the press saying that he apologized to the fans and stated that Liverpool were clearly the better side on the night.
“They have been better than us. I apologise. After what happened in Rome, this happened again. It’s tough to go out like this after the first-leg result. Liverpool have been smarter than us, they were faster. I think we had chances to score the goal we needed, but it wasn’t meant to be today,” said Busquets.
