The Indian Premier League (IPL) is embarking on a new journey from the 2025 season, adhering strictly to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Code of Conduct regulations. Historically, the IPL has operated under its own Code of Conduct, tailored specifically for the unique nature of the tournament. However, the growing need for consistency in handling player conduct and disciplinary measures has led to the adoption of the ICC’s T20I regulations. This shift means that any breaches in conduct during the IPL will now be assessed and penalized in accordance with the ICC’s established standards. The sanctions for Level 1, 2, or 3 offences, which include a range of penalties from fines to suspension, will be implemented uniformly across all teams and players.
This alignment comes in the wake of several high-profile incidents during the 2023 & 2024 IPL seasons, where players such as Harshit Rana, Tim David, Kieron Pollard, Virat Kohli, Sam Curran, Rasikh Salam Dar, and Ishan Kishan were penalized for Level 1 offences. These occurrences highlighted the need for a more standardized approach to disciplinary actions, leading to the BCCI’s decision to adopt the ICC’s regulations.
The upcoming 2025 IPL season, scheduled to commence on March 21 and conclude on May 25, will be the first to operate under these new guidelines. In addition to the men’s tournament, the Women’s Premier League will also be held in various cities including Lucknow, Mumbai, Baroda, and Bengaluru, marking a milestone in the promotion of women’s cricket in India.
