Tom Moody, the former Australian cricketer, has expressed his views on the recent change in the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians (MI) team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rohit Sharma, who led MI to five IPL titles, has been replaced by Hardik Pandya as the captain for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
Tom Moody on Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy
Moody believes that this change in leadership will not affect Rohit Sharma’s performance. In a recent talk with Star Sports, Moddy said, “We know what Rohit Sharma is capable of doing and how dangerous he is as a player, as he has demonstrated with an Indian shirt on his back. I don’t think the captaincy is going to have any bearing on his approach. I think he will go out and play his brand of cricket. He is very confident and owns his own game”.
Rohit Sharma has been a key player for MI and has played a pivotal role in their success over the years. Despite a lean run in IPL 2023, his overall performance in the IPL has been impressive. Moody’s statement suggests that Rohit’s aggressive batting approach and his ability to perform under pressure will remain unaffected by the change in captaincy.
On the other hand, Hardik Pandya, the new MI captain, has a significant challenge ahead of him. He led the Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2022 title and also reached the final in the following year. However, leading MI, a team with high expectations and a massive fanbase, will be a different experience for him.
Moody stated, “They (MI) expect nothing but excellence, which is what you will expect of any high-performance environment. So Hardik’s challenge is managing that expectation and allowing himself and his whole team to be able to play with that freedom, without that pressure sort of filtering into the dressing room”.
