In a remarkable achievement, D. Gukesh has dethroned Arjun Erigaisi to become the highest-ranked Indian chess player in the latest FIDE rankings. At just 18 years old, Gukesh has risen to the fourth spot globally, amassing an impressive 2784 rating points. This accomplishment came after his second victory in the Tata Steel Tournament in Wijk Aan Zee, Netherlands, where he defeated Vincent Keymer of Germany.
Gukesh’s phenomenal run continues
Gukesh’s ascent to the top has been nothing short of meteoric. Since clinching the world title by defeating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore last December, he has maintained an undefeated streak in the Tata Steel Tournament. His recent performances have been stellar, with two victories and three draws so far in the tournament.
Arjun Erigaisi, who had been the highest-ranked Indian for a considerable period, now trails Gukesh with 2779.5 rating points, slipping to the fifth spot. Erigaisi had reached a peak rating of 2801 in December last year, making him one of the top 15 highest-rated players in history and the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to cross the 2800 threshold.
