Former England captain turned a renowned commentator Nasser Hussain has applauded India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma, saying that the Mumbai Indians (MI) captain is not just one of the great white-ball players but he is also a calm and cool captain. He also calls Rohit a decent man.

“His captaincy, he is calm, cool, makes the right decisions at the right time and he has had such a good time with MI that there are various cricketers around the world now, including in India, saying that maybe it is time for Virat [Kohli] to step down from T20s and let Rohit take over. His record speaks for himself,” Hussain was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

Nasser Hussain also praised his batting skills who led Mumbai to its record-fifth title recently in the 2020 IPL in Dubai. “He is one of the great white ball players. If you look at the 50-over cricket, he has a couple of double hundreds he has had massive scores, in T20, he lost a bit of rhythm but he made runs in the final,” he further added.

The former England player also said that Rohit Sharma belongs to that category who can turn the table anytime and score on big occasions even if he could face a rough phase.

“He is a decent guy when he said I should have sacrificed my wicket for Suryakumar Yadav [in the IPL final]. He is a seriously very good player and captain,” he again shared.

However, a successful stint with Mumbai, many former players believe Rohit could be the captain in the shorter format of the game.

“If Rohit Sharma doesn’t become India captain, it’s their loss, not Rohit’s,” said former test opener Gautam Gambhir. “Rohit has won five IPL titles, he is the most successful captain in the history of the tournament. It would be a shame if he is not made the white-ball captain after this. Because there’s nothing more Rohit Sharma can do.”

Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan said that giving T20 captaincy to Rohit Sharma will help reduce Virat Kohli’s workload as he is the captain in three formats now.

“I honestly believe that the Indian team will be better off in Twenty20 cricket being led by Rohit Sharma,” said Vaughan. “Virat Kohli is superhuman. Giving away one aspect of his captaincy will free him up to be the 50-overs leader and the test match leader.”
