Here is an excerpt of FIFA’s “Stats of the Day”:
- 1950 – England are eliminated 1-0 by Spain at the end of the group stage in their first-ever FIFA World Cup.
- 2010 – Asamoah Gyan becomes the first player to miss two World Cup penalties, failing to convert against Uruguay following an earlier miss from the spot against the Czech Republic in 2006.
- 2010 – For the first time since 1970, Uruguay qualify for the semi-finals by defeating Ghana in their first-ever World Cup penalty shoot-out.
