Vijay Shankar played a crucial hand with the bat for the Men In Blue against New Zealand. Batting at No.3, the all-rounder was one of the major positives to emerge despite the series loss.
Traditionally a lower middle order batsman, Vijay Shankar was brought up the order by skipper Rohit Sharma, much to the surprise of the viewers.

It was not only the viewers who were confused as Shankar reveals that he was taken aback as well. During the post-match press conference, Shankar was quoted as saying:
“It was a big surprise for me when they asked me to bat at three. That is a big thing. I was focussed on playing the situation. You need to be open anyway if you are playing for a team like India,”
The all-rounder also added that he got to learn a lot from this away series and asserted the importance of seniors in the team. Shankar added:
“These (Australia and New Zealand) two series I have learnt a lot. I might not have bowled a lot, but I learnt to bowl in different conditions. In batting, just watching seniors like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni, how they go about their job, I learnt a lot,”
Shankar truly made the best of his promotion, especially in the last T20, where he managed to top score during the Men In Blues’ pursuit of 213.
