Former Indian cricketer and renowned cricket analyst, Aakash Chopra, has recently expressed his views on the potential of Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel to secure a spot in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. He believes that the upcoming IPL 2024 season presents a significant opportunity for both players to showcase their skills and make a strong case for their inclusion in the national team.

Aakash Chopra on opportunities for T20 WC through IPL

“There are many opportunities. Yashasvi Jaiswal has the opportunity to win the Orange Cap. Jos Buttler has the opportunity to show his dominance once again. Sanju Samson has the opportunity to be selected for the T20 World Cup, and the same can be said about Dhruv Jurel,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Sanju Samson, the skipper of Rajasthan Royals (RR), is a seasoned player with a proven track record in the IPL. Despite his inconsistent performances in the international arena, Samson’s explosive batting style and agility behind the stumps make him a strong contender for the wicketkeeper-batsman role in the T20 format. The upcoming IPL season could be a turning point for Samson, providing him with a platform to demonstrate his capabilities and stake his claim for the T20 World Cup squad.

On the other hand, Dhruv Jurel, another promising talent from the RR camp, has been making waves in the domestic circuit. Jurel emerged as a breakout star in India’s 4-1 triumph over England in the 5-match Test series. His inclusion in the national squad was a result of his impressive performances for RR in IPL 2023 and at the domestic level. Aakash Chopra feels that Jurel, like Samson, has a golden opportunity to cement his place in the T20 World Cup squad through his performances in IPL 2024.

Chopra also highlighted the intense competition for the wicketkeeper-batter’s spot in the Indian squad. With the likes of Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan also in contention, both Samson and Jurel will need to bring their A-game to the fore. However, Chopra believes that if it’s a straight shoot-out for the lower-middle order spot, Jurel might have an edge due to his batting position.

“This (RR) is a team where there is a competition between two players for a spot in the T20 World Cup. An opener will not go. So Ishan Kishan is there as an opener keeper, but he will not go. Rishabh Pant is available now. However, it doesn’t mean that he will straight away be selected for the T20 World Cup,” he explained.

While Chopra’s analysis provides an insightful perspective, it’s important to note that the final decision rests with the selectors and team management. They will be closely monitoring the performances of all contenders during the IPL before finalizing the squad for the T20 World Cup.
