Indian female boxing sensation Jamuna Boro has been making a lot of waves inside the boxing ring. Last year, the 22-year old from Dekhiajuli in Assam won a Bronze medal at the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships.
The 22-year old is quickly rising through the ranks to become one of the best boxers to come out of Assam.
Boro started her career as a boxer in 2009 after getting noticed by the Sports Authority of India. Following this, she was included in the Elite women’s team. She is a three-time sub-junior women’s senior boxing champion.
The Sports India Show had the opportunity to chat with Jamuna Boro via a telephonic conversation.
1.) How are you doing currently under lockdown? Are you doing any sort of training?
I am spending time with my family during the lockdown. No, I underwent shoulder surgery last year so I haven’t been able to train.
2.) Last year you won a Bronze medal at the world championships held in Russia in the Non-Olympic 54 kg category. After that you said that you wanted to move to the 57kg category to qualify for the Olympics, why didn’t that materialize?
I was suffering from a shoulder injury after the world championship. After that, I had to undergo surgery in Mumbai in the month of November. I still need two-months of rest before I can start training again.

However, with the Olympic games being postponed for a year, I will be requesting the Boxing Federation of India to allow me to compete in the 57 kg category. I will request them to hold selection trials for the 57kg category.
3.) You have an incredible back story, We all know how much sacrifices your mother has made in order for you to reach this stage? When your mother looks at everything that you have achieved, what is her reaction?
My mother has been my biggest supporter and she always encouraged me to perform better inside the ring. She always told me to focus on my game and she has worked so hard and sacrificed so much for me. I am ripping the benefits of all of that right now.
So my mother is quite happy with my career’s progress and in what I have been able to achieve so far.
4.) Right now you are a national star, are more and more people recognizing you in Assam and outside of Assam?
Yeah, people are recognizing me. Sometimes they ask for my autographs, but it’s not as unusual.
5.) You are also an employee for the Assam rifles? Is it hard to maintain your job and train as a boxer? How are you able to balance it?
Assam rifles have also been very supportive of me and they have never forced me to do any specific duties. They want me to perform well and bring more medals for India.
6.) Lovlina is another boxer from Assam who has gained national stardom and she has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, how do you think she will do?
Right now she is performing well and is also extremely focused inside the camp. She is very focused and if this continues that she will definitely win a medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
She has also been winning medals in previous tournaments. I am confident that she will bring glory to our country.
7.) In the training camp, you have previously said that Mary Kom has helped you a lot, please tell us something about that.
Mary Kom helps everyone in the training camp, not just me. She gives us suggestions and helps us if we are making any mistakes in the camp. If I don’t throw a punch correctly she corrects me and tells if what I am doing wrong.
8.) Of all the boxers that have qualified for the Olympics who do you think will bring a medal for India?
All the boxers who have qualified for the Olympics are extremely good. They are very hardworking and I have seen in camp how much effort they have put in the camp.
They are also very good boxers, So I am confident that they will bring medals from India.
