Wrestling: Five Indians make the cut for World Wrestling Championships

Indian wrestlers Deepak Punia and Ravi Dahiya have secured their qualifications for the World Wrestling Championships that is to be held in September for their respective weight categories.

Bajrang Punia (65kg), who happens to be the Worlds sliver medalist too qualified for the World Championships along with the likes of Mausam Khatri (97kg) and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sumit Malik (125kg).

While Ravi Dahiya was the one to prevail in the 57kg category, the other matches too produced some stellar performances. Delhi’s Rahul saw himself upset Olympian Sandeep Tomar and the experienced Utkarsh Kale before losing to Dahiya.

Punia prevailed after beating 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Pawan Saroha. The other clashes saw Bajrang outclass Harphul, Khatri overcome Satywart Kadian and Sumit get past Satender Malik.

Selection trials for 74kg and the remaining weights categories that are not the part of the Olympic event (61kg, 70kg, 79kg and 92kg) will be held in the second week of August. The World Championships which is scheduled to be held in September at Kazakhstan will serve as the first event for Olympic qualification.
