Former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, Narsingh Pancham Yadav, has been elected as the chairman of the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) Athletes’ Commission. This marks a significant milestone in his career, transitioning from an accomplished wrestler to a key administrative role.
Narsingh, an Arjuna awardee and Asian Championships gold medallist in 2010, competed at the 2012 London Olympic Games in the 74kg category. His journey to the Olympics was marked by controversy when two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, who missed the qualification event due to an injury, requested a trial bout against him. After a series of legal battles, Narsingh was cleared to participate in the Rio Olympics.
However, in a shocking turn of events, Narsingh failed two dope tests prior to the Games and was banned for four years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Despite this setback, he maintained that the entire episode was a case of sabotage. His ban ended in July 2020.
Narsingh Yadav wins WFI Athletes’ Commission elections
The election process for the WFI’s Athletes’ Commission involved eight candidates vying for seven positions. After polling, conducted on ballot paper, seven members were elected, who then chose Narsingh as the chairman of the commission.
The other elected members of the Athletes Commission include Sahil (Delhi), Smitha AS (Kerala), Bharti Bhaghei (UP), Khushboo S Pawar (Gujarat), Nikki (Haryana), and Sweta Dubey (Bengal). The formation of this commission was mandated by the United World Wrestling (UWW), the international body for the sport, as a condition for lifting the suspension of WFI.
This commission is expected to play a crucial role in resolving the grievances of wrestlers. It was formed in the wake of a protracted protest by six top wrestlers, including Olympic Games medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik and Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat.
Narsingh Yadav’s election as the chairman of WFI’s Athletes’ Commission marks a new chapter in his career. His leadership and experience as a former wrestler are expected to bring valuable insights to the panel, aiding in the resolution of athletes’ grievances and contributing to the advancement of wrestling in India.
