Wrestler Deepak Punia Drops Out Of World Championships Due To Elbow Injury

Indian wrestling ace Deepak Punia will not be a part of the country’s contingent at the upcoming 2022 World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade after suffering an elbow injury during training.

Punia, who clinched silver at the 2019 edition of the Worlds and also bagged a gold last month at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, injured in elbow during a trailing session in Michigan, USA.

Following a trial conducted by the The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Sanjeet was selected as a replacement for Punia to represent India in the 86kg freestyle category at the Worlds, as revealed by WFi secretary Vinod Tomar.

A naib subedar in the Indian Army, Punia clinched the CWG gold after defeating Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam in the 86kg summit clash. His 2019 Worlds silver also came in the same category, and the 23-year-old Haryanvi has also bagged two back to back silver medals at the 2021 and 2022 edition of the Asian Games, both in the 86 kg category as well.

The 2022 World Wrestling Championships, which is the 17th edition of the event, will set itself in motion from 10th September and will last until 25th September at the Štark Arena in the Serbian capital.
