Sanjay Manjrekar, a former Indian batter recently stated that despite Shubman Gill’s injury, India is capable of defeating any side in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. On Wednesday, October 11, India and Afghanistan will collide in the World Cup clash and it is scheduled to take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
In an interview with Star Sports, Manjrekar claimed that even with Gill being sidelined, India remains a strong and capable team that can defeat every opponent in the competition. After missing India’s match against Australia on October 8, Gill will now miss their match against Afghanistan due to a dengue diagnosis.
“Disappointing for him personally more than the team because the team has enough options to continue to be strong, and we saw that in the first game as well. The team is strong and good enough to beat all the oppositions despite Shubman Gill not being there,” said Manjrekar.
Manjrekar believes Gill makes the team stronger. However, his absence comes at the worst time. Gill is the highest-scorer in 2023, amassing 1230 runs in 20 matches at an average of 72.35.
“Having said that, Shubman Gill just makes the team even more stronger and the kind of form that he has been in, you want to cash in. This is the worst possible time that you want to miss matches and it’s been beyond his control,” Manjrekar added.
Manjrekar further praised Gill and said that he is spectacular to watch as he scores his runs beautifully. Gill could also be missing India’s heavyweight clash against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on October 14 due to dengue.
“What I will say though is that the fans, people who come to the ground and the people who watch on TV, will miss him because this guy is extremely watchable. He gets runs beautifully, so it’s fun to watch. So that aspect will be lost but I don’t see India in trouble too much,” said Manjrekar.
