England cricketer Ben Stokes recently hailed Mohammed Shami as the bowler of the ongoing World Cup 2023 after the Indian pacer picked 14 wickets in just three matches so far in the campaign.
Shami has showcased some incredible performances in the ongoing World Cup 2023 campaign. In 13 World Cup matches over three editions, he has claimed 40 wickets at an average of 14.07 and an economy rate of slightly less than five.
Recently, India defeated Sri Lanka by a record 302 runs in a game in which Shami was a key player. With his record of seven such exploits, he has taken more wickets in World Cups than any other bowler, including Mitchell Starc and Imran Tahir.
One of the most memorable moments of Shami’s World Cup campaign was his high-spirited spell against Ben Stokes during the India vs England match. Shami set up Stokes perfectly before dismissing him for a 10-ball duck.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the England vs Australia game, Stokes heaped praise on Shami and said that Shami has always found a way to be amongst the wickets.
“I’ve played a lot of cricket against Shami, he’s a fantastic bowler and I think we watched him last night and they brought a stat up in a World Cup is quite phenomenal actually. He’s been obviously the bowler of the World Cup, I think. I don’t think he’s played every game but the way in which he’s, in every situation and every game he’s come in it’s been incredible the amount of wickets he’s taken. He’s just found a way to be able to get wicket[s]. Obviously that spell against us was one of many he’s had this World Cup. Sometimes you just say to the opposition that you’re very good and Mohamed Shami’s been very good throughout this whole World Cup,” said Stokes.
