Sri Lankan veteran Angelo Mathews recently faced a rare dismissal during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 clash between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on Monday. Mathews was dismissed without facing a ball, making history for all the wrong reasons.
After Bangladesh appealed for a timed-out, Mathews was enraged with himself when match umpire Marais Erasmus declared him out. At the One Day International (ODI) World Cup, the Sri Lankan all-rounder set an unwelcome record by being the first batter to be timed out.
It’s interesting to note that in men’s international cricket, Mathews is the first hitter to face an uncommon dismissal. Following the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama in the 24th over, the Sri Lankan batter walked out to face Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan. Mathews arrived at the crease with the wrong helmet and his error paved the way for Shakib and Co. to appeal for timed-out.
The laws state that the batsman should be ready to face the ball within three minutes of arriving at the crease. Mathews tried to explain his case to Shakib and noted that the strap of his helmet was broken. However, Shakib refused to withdraw the appeal and Mathews was sent back to the dressing room.
