In a remarkable display of skill and determination, world champion Sachin Khilari secured a silver medal in the men’s shot put (F46) event at the Paris Paralympics on September 4, 2024. This achievement not only adds to India’s growing tally of medals but also sets a new Asian record, highlighting Khilari’s exceptional talent and dedication to his sport.

A Stellar Performance by Sachin Khilari

Sachin Khilari’s performance at the Stade de France was nothing short of spectacular. Competing against some of the best athletes in the world, Khilari managed to throw an impressive 16.32 meters, securing the silver medal. This throw not only earned him a place on the podium but also set a new Asian record in the F46 category, surpassing his previous best.

The Journey to Silver

Khilari’s journey to the silver medal was marked by consistent and powerful throws. From the very start of the competition, he remained in contention for the top spots, showcasing his prowess with each attempt. His best throw came on his second attempt, which ultimately secured his position as the second-best in the event. Canada’s Greg Stewart clinched the gold with a throw of 16.38 meters, just 0.06 meters ahead of Khilari.

Overcoming Adversity

Sachin Khilari’s path to success has been filled with challenges. Born in Kargani, Atpadi Taluka, Sangli district, Maharashtra, Khilari faced a significant setback at the age of nine when a bicycle accident led to a fracture and gangrene in his left hand. Despite this adversity, he pursued his passion for sports while studying to become an engineer. Initially, he took up javelin throw but had to switch to shot put after a shoulder injury. This change proved to be a turning point in his career.

Training and Dedication

Under the guidance of coach Arvind Chavan, Khilari honed his skills in the shot put. His dedication and perseverance paid off when he won his first gold medal in the Jaipur Nationals in 2017 with a throw of 58.47 meters. Since then, he has continued to improve, culminating in his world para title with a new Asian record throw of 16.21 meters in Paris last year.

Khilari’s silver medal is a significant addition to India’s medal tally at the Paris Paralympics, bringing the total to 21 medals. The track and field contingent, in particular, has proven to be a major contributor to India’s success at the Paralympics.
