Nikhat Zareen and Nitu Ghanghas have assured India two silver medals at the ongoing Women’s World Championships after securing berths in their respective finals with victories in the semifinal round on Thursday.

Nikhat, the 2022 champion as well as CWG gold medallist from last year, marked a dominating 5-0 win over Ingrit Valencia of Colombia in the 50 kg semifinal outing.

Utilizing her speed and tactical finesse, the 26-year-old kept the fight under control, as she outboxed Valencia throughout the five rounds to earn her place in the final, as the Telangana fighter aims to defend her gold. She had reached the semis with a 5-2 split decision victory over Thailand’s Chuthamat Raksat.

Nitu, a two-time world youth champion and the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, earned her spot in the 48 kg summit clash at the Championships. She marked a superb win over Alua Balkibekova, defeating the Kazakh pugilist 5-2 in their semifinal outing. It was a rematch to their meet from last year’s edition.

This time, the two former adversaries went all offensive against one another right from the start. However, it was Alua who was a step ahead, taking the first round 3-2. The second round saw Nitu utilizing strong hooks and jabs, and while both opponents resorted to body jabs and clinching, it was Nitu who was able to even the odds as she took the round.
