Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora concluded their dream run at the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships with a gold medal each in their respective categories, courtesy of their superb performances in the finals on Saturday.
In the 48 kg summit clash, Nitu’s opponent was Altantsetseg Lutsaikhan of Mongolia. The bout started off with the Indian pugilist going right onto the offensive, while Altantsetseg going into a more measured approach.
The second round saw some clean lands from the Mongolian, and while Nitu did lose balance at one instance, kept her ground and maintained the lead on the judges’ scorecards.
The third round, with both contestants carrying a yellow each, finally saw Nitu emerging out on top with back to back clean punches, and sealing the deal with a dominating 5-0 unanimous decision victory to secure the country’s first gold at the championships this year.

The second Indian in action today was Saweety Boora, who locked horns against Chinese boxer Wang Lina in the 81 kg final. The first round of this clash saw a more reserved approach from both fighters, with some punches from Saweety which Lina managed to evade, but the Indian was in the lead at the end of the round.
In the second, Saweety picked up her pace and went into a more offensive approach. Despite the lack of clean punches in this round, Saweety managed to keep her lead over Lina.
In the third and final round, Lina looked to land some heavy blows to get into the fight, but Saweety managed to maintain her guard up throughout the remaining minutes, and secured a split decision win to clinch the second gold of the night for the country.

Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain will be in action on Sunday, in pursuit of gold in the 50 kg and 75 kg categories respectively.
