Alex Morgan is a superstar in women’s football. Regarded equivalent to Messi or Ronaldo in the game, Alex led her US national side to a world cup success earlier this month.
After beating Netherlands 2-0 in the final to clinch the cup, Alex Morgan has now gone on to reveal the reasons behind her decision to adopt a vegan diet.
“I’m passionate about giving animals a voice,” Morgan told Reuters recently. “I even adopted a vegan diet, because it didn’t feel fair to have a dog I adore, and yet eat meat all the time.”
Alex Morgan happens to be not the only person to follow this. Along with her, six of her teammates have also started to practice a strict vegan diet. The diet sees them embrace only plant food and eliminate even the likes of meat, dairy and eggs.
James Loomis, M.D., a practitioner of internal medicine at Barnard Medical Center in Washington, D.C and a former footballer has given her inputs on following a vegan diet. She stresses on the point that protein being taken as a mandatory intake for athletes is just a myth.
“One of the misconceptions in sports nutrition is that we have to have animal protein to perform at a high level. That’s just not true,” stated James Loomis.
“I recently turned 60 and I’m able to do stuff physically now that I could never dream of doing and I attribute a lot of that to my diet,”
Alex Morgan too has given immense credit for the vegan diet and also went on to state that she has been less injury prone after changing her diet.
“I’m knocking on wood right now, but I haven’t had a serious injury [since her last, which was before going vegan] and I credit that to my diet. I feel better all around, I feel like I have great energy, I feel like I’m sleeping really well, I feel like I’m just more clear-minded and not as reliant on caffeine as before.”
