Indian boxing ace Nikhat Zareen is now through to the second round at the ongoing Women’s Boxing World Championships, courtesy of a stoppage victory over Ismayilova Anakhanim of Azerbaijan on Thursday.
There were three standing counts for the Azerbaijani pugilist in the second round, which ended the fight. The top seed, Roumaysa Boualam, will be Nikhat’s next opponent in the round of 32.
“I am happy that with my win India’s campaign has kicked off. I had boxed her before and made my plans as per her gameplan which helped me,” said Nikhat following her victory,
“It’s not a problem,” the 26-year-old commented on being unseeded. “That’s the thing about draws, anyone can get any seeding. It doesn’t matter but my draw is good, as the competition goes on I’ll get tough opponents.”
The year 2022 was highly successful for Nikhat, as she tasted triumph at the Strandja Memorial, World Championships, as well as the Commonwealth Games.
After winning the 52 kg gold at the Worlds, Nikhat moved to 50 kg, which has replaced the 52 kg category at the Olympic Games and in that category, she clinched the gold at the Commonwealth Games as well.
As for Sakshi, she won her first round outing with a unanimous decision of 5-0 over Jose Maria Martinez of Colombia.
