Who is Preetismita Bhoi? The Jr Weightlifter from Odisha Breaks World Record

15-year-old Indian weightlifter Preetismita Bhoi shattered the youth clean and jerk world record in the women’s 40kg category, securing a gold medal at the IWF World Youth Championships.

On Wednesday, she surpassed the previous record of 75kg by lifting an impressive 76kg. Bhoi’s snatch lift of 57kg brought her total effort to 133kg, just 2kg shy of the youth world standard on the competition’s first day.

Preetismita hails from a small tribal village called Marlaba in the Gajapati district of Odisha. Her parents shifted to Bhubaneshwar at a young age for a better livelihood. Preetismita trains at the Odisha Weightlifting HPC sub-centre in Dhenkanal under the mentorship of Gopal Das.

Under the tutelage of Gopal Das, Preetismita toggles between schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya and training at the sub-centre. She is currently undergoing home-schooling in the Bhubaneshwar centre in addition to the training.

Jyoshan Sabar wins Silver

India celebrated a 1-2 finish as Jyoshna Sabar claimed the silver medal with a total lift of 125kg (56kg+69kg), while Turkey’s Fatma Kolcak secured the bronze with a total of 120kg (55kg+65kg).

Babulal Hembrom became the fourth Indian lifter to secure a podium finish, bagging the bronze in the men’s 49kg event with a total lift of 193kg (86kg+107kg).
