Manchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney feels that it will take a while before someone surpasses his 253 goal tally for the club with the players not staying at a single club for long like the days in the past. Although, he feels that two players do have the calibre to break the record.

Wayne Rooney wrote in his Sunday Times column that if in case Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi decided to make the switch to Manchester United in the twilight of their careers, they would probably break it in 3 or 4 years. The 34-year-old wrote:

“Mind you, if Messi or Ronaldo came to old Trafford for a swansong they’d probably break it in three or four years,”

Despite being the record scorer of both Manchester United and the England National Team, Rooney claimed that he should have scored way more despite not being a natural finisher like Gary Linekar or Ruud Van Nistelrooy. He wrote:

“This might surprise you, but I’m not a natural goalscorer. I was never a Gary Lineker or a Ruud van Nistelrooy.”

“I hold the goal records for Manchester United and England and I’m very proud about that – yet there have been better number nines than me,” he added.

“I played for United for 13 years, England for 15 years. I had time to break those records – and looking back I should have scored more.”

Rooney found the back of the net 253 times for the Red Devils while netting 53 times for the Three Lions. Making through the ranks as a teenage sensation, Rooney made the switch to Old Trafford from Everton and served the club for 13 years before returning back to Everton for a year.

The 34-year-old then plied his trades in the MLS after a stint with DC United and is now currently serving as a player-manager for Derby County in his return to England.
