Earlier yesterday, India lost a closely-fought T20 match against New Zealand, and also surrendered the series 1-2, but almost everything that happened in the game was overshadowed by this one gesture by MS Dhoni.

On a very specific occasion during the game, the former captain-cum-World Champion prevented an Indian flag from falling to the ground.

For context, a fan had run into the field to touch Dhoni’s feet, while holding the Indian flag in his hand. As he bowed down to do so, the flag started touching the ground.

Dhoni used his super-quick reflexes for good measure then, and took the flag from his hand, making his countrymen very proud of him.

Watch the entire video here:

The Indian Wicket-keeper is famous for not sporting the glorious Indian tricolor on his helmet, as opposed to a move that was made popular by India’s (and the World’s) greatest cricketer ever, Sachin Tendulkar – so as to remind himself and the rest of his teammates that they were playing for the country.

Dhoni’s reason for not abiding by that unspoken rule, is patriotic in itself – as part of his wicketkeeping duties, he often has to place his helmet on the ground, and with the tricolor on it, that would symbolically mean placing the flag down on the ground too. A true “keeper” for the country, by all means.

Dhoni’s gesture kept Twitter as active as ever. Check out some of the reactions below:
