After enduring a rough quarantine period, it took only 2 minutes for Christian Eriksen to find the target. The playmaker helped Inter Milan take an early lead in a surprising fashion as his corner kick managed to evade bodies including the goalkeeper to caress the net.
Playing in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals, Inter Milan needed an early goal to put pressure on Napoli who headed into the clash with a 1-0 advantage.
The away side were awarded an early corner which Eriksen dispatched onto a sea of bodies waiting in the box. But as opposed to a clearance or an attempt on target, the ball seemed to repel the players and head towards a surprised David Ospina who was unable to thwart it out and found the ball finding the goal through his legs in an embarrassing fashion. A delighted Eriksen was soon engulfed with teammates but instead of the usual celebrations, he was met with a series of elbow bumps keeping in mind of the new guidelines.
The former Tottenham Hotspurs star, who switched to the Serie A giants in the January transfer window had a rough couple of months due to the pandemic. Unable to secure a residence in Milan, the player was forced to spend the lockdown in Inter Milan’s training complex and had to maintain his fitness by running in a car park.
While Eriksen’s strike gave the visitors some respite, Napoli retaliated with a goal of their own through Dries Mertens’ record-breaking goal to level the game and take an advantage in the tie. While Inter Milan dominated the pitch with two-thirds of possession, Napoli held on to the result and secure a place in the Coppa Italia finals where they will face Juventus on 17th June at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
