Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar will miss the upcoming second leg of IPL 2021 in UAE due to a finger injury. In a statement, RCB confirmed the development and also named a replacement in form of Bengal cricketer Akash Deep.

Sundar was one of the three Indian players including Gill and Avesh who got injured before the commencement of the England series. All three of these players were sent back to India and Prithvi Shaw and Surya Kumar Yadav were named their replacements.

This is a massive setback for the Virat Kohli led side as Washington Sundar was one of their key players. Though Sundar had an average first half of IPL 2021, he brings a good balance to the squad. Sundar took only three wickets in the first leg and didn’t score many runs.

However, Sundar is consistently representing India at the International stage. Sundar also has the ability to bowl in powerplay overs. Plus, Sundar had an exceptional IPL 2020 which was in UAE. He bowled his maximum quota of overs in powerplay but didn’t leak many runs. In fact, he was one of the most economical bowlers in that season.

Washington Sundar’s World T20 hopes hangs in the balance

Even though Washington Sundar was a regular member in the T20 side, there is no certainty that he will make it to the World T20 squad. There are a lot of contenders for the spinner’s place in the side. Hence, IPL 2021 was implicitly a World Cup audition for some spots in the squad.

It is uncertain that Sundar will make it in the World Cup squad now given that he is set to miss the IPL. This gives a great chance to bowlers like Rahu Chahar and Varun Chakravarti to cement their place. Also, India’s veteran spinner R Ashwin will also fancy his chances of getting selected in the squad for the off-spinner’s role.

Washington Sundar was having a great year, especially in Test cricket. Sundar had an outstanding debut in Test cricket against Australia at Gabba. He scored a crucial fifty in the first innings and took key wickets. He continued his rich form against England at home where he scored a couple of nineties.
