Ravichandran Ashwin has evolved to be one of India’s most reliable players in the longest format. After reaching the 400 wicket landmark in the pink ball test, the off-spinner aims to do more. Former India batsman VVS Laxman attributed Ashwins success to his preparation and the fact that he constantly reinvents himself.
Ashwin broke a slew of records in the Ahmedabad test where he managed to pick 6 wickets. With the wicket of Jofra Archer on Day 2, he became only the fourth Indian to reach 200 wickets and at the same time, was the second-fastest bowler to reach the landmark after Muttiah Muralitharan.
Speaking about Ashwin on Star Sports, Laxman claimed that the spinner is really intelligent and praised his immaculate planning, preparation and execution against the opposition on the field.
“I think he’s (Ashwin) a very intelligent person. When you’re playing at the highest level, then it’s not only about your skill, it’s about your preparation, your planning and execution is so critical.
“So, he works out what are the weaknesses of the batsman. He plans those dismissals and that’s why I think he is reinventing himself,”
Laxman took the example of Ashwin’s dominance against Steve Smith during the recently concluded series against Australia away from home.
“We saw recently in the Australia series how he (Ashwin) troubled someone as great as Steve Smith and that’s another thing that makes Ashwin or any champion player special, that he wants to be the best and compete against the best,”
Despite being out of contention in the Indian limited-overs setup for a while now, Ashwin has answered his critics by stepping up his game in overseas fixtures. Moreover, his lean patch with the bat also has seemingly ended following a majestic ton in his home town during the second test against England.
