Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has a compelling message for the next generation of players: embrace aggression in Test cricket. Sehwag believes that an aggressive approach can reinvigorate the oldest format of the game and attract crowds back to the stadiums.
Virender Sehwag’s thoughts on aggressive approach in Test Cricket
Sehwag praises England’s current approach to Test cricket. Under the leadership of captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, England has adopted an aggressive batting style. Their run rate of 4.61 runs per over since June 2022 is evidence of this bold approach.
“The manner in which England is playing Test cricket, scoring at five runs an over. In our playing days, Australia used to score at 4 runs per over. I have always believed that if you can attack, then you give your team more chances to win the Test matches,” Sehwag was quoted as saying by PTI.
Sehwag emphasizes that aggressive play can bring spectators back to Test matches. While T20 cricket dominates the spotlight, Test cricket remains the pinnacle. If young players develop an aggressive game that suits the longer format, it benefits the entire cricketing ecosystem.
“So, if anyone develops an aggressive game that can suit Test cricket, then why not? After all, we would like people to come and watch Tests. Was it good or bad? I scored a triple ton in 270-odd balls. Today’s kid might score 400 if they play that many balls,” he added.
As one of the greatest openers in cricket history, Sehwag’s fearless strokeplay made Test cricket entertaining. His 8586 runs from 180 innings, at an average of 49.34 and a strike rate of 82.23, showcase his impact. Sehwag’s two triple hundreds and six double centuries exemplify his attacking mindset.

Sehwag encourages young cricketers to continue the trend. If they can attack, take risks, and entertain, they contribute to the legacy of Test cricket. Today’s kids might even surpass his records, scoring big while playing aggressively.
In a world where T20 dazzles with its fireworks, Sehwag’s call for aggression in Tests reminds us of the timeless beauty of the longer format. Let’s hope the next generation heeds his advice and injects fresh energy into the game we love.
