Virender Sehwag still gets goosebumps when India play Pakistan

The cricketing rivalry between India and Pakistan is arguably the biggest rivalry in World cricket. This is because the two countries share a lot of history, language and political tensions with one another. Recently, the former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag also opened up on this rivalry.

Virender Sehwag

Sehwag still remembers his ODI debut which he made against Pakistan in Mohali in 1999. Pakistan team were one of the best during that time as they had plenty of match winners in their side including the likes of Saeed Anwar, Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram and Inzaman. Sehwag revealed that when he walked in to bat at No. 7 he received incessant abuses from the opposition. He was finally dismissed by speedster Shoaib Akhtar for just one.

In a chat with RJ Raunak on his YouTube channel, Sehwag said :“I was around 20-21 years old then. When I went in to bat, players like Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, (Mohammad) Yousuf and all other Pakistan team members welcomed me by abusing a lot. I even didn’t know some of the bad words they used.”

“I couldn’t say much in response then as it was my first game and I was nervous as well. Close to 20-25k people had come to watch the game,” Sehwag added.

However, once the Nawab of Najafagarh got settled in the side, he responded to the abuses by scoring a triple century. Hence, he took a kind of revenge.

“But later, once I got settled in the team, then I responded to all the abuses with a triple century when we toured Pakistan in 2003-04 and took kind of a revenge. For the same reason I think whenever India plays Pakistan, I still get goosebumps,” Sehwag added

Virender Sehwag’s record against Pakistan

Arguably, Pakistan brings the best out of Virender Sehwag. In tests, he has an outstanding average of 91.14 against Pakistan. This includes 2 double centuries and one triple century. His famous triple century came in Multan during India’s tour of Pakistan in 2003-04.

In ODIs he has an average of 35 and an astonishing strike rate of 102.59. He has scored two centuries and five half centuries against Pakistan in ODIs.
