IPL 2021: Virender Sehwag believes RR players are not pleased with Samson standing as captain

Rajasthan Royals executed a complete revamp of their unit ahead of the ongoing season of the IPL. One of those major changes included the appointment of Sanju Samson as the captain in place of Steve Smith, who was axed altogether. Following RR’s convincing win over KKR at the Wankhede, the former opener believes that not all is merry in the RR camp.

IPL 2021: Virender Sehwag believes RR players are not pleased with Samson standing as captain

Samson has had a mixed start to his captaincy career. In the first leg of fixtures at the Wankhede, RR were able to manage two wins, a last-gasp win over DC and the much more comfortable outing against KKR.

The Kerala batsman led the run chase last night from the front with an unbeaten composed knock that saw his side chase down the score in the penultimate over.

Noting his body language, Virender Sehwag opined that Samson is still not used to the role that he was given out of nowhere. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he also added that maybe the rest of the squad is not happy with the management for handing the captaincy over to Samson.

“Maybe other players in the RR camp aren’t happy with Samson being given the captaincy. If a player remains at peace with himself and is suddenly made captain, then even he takes time to settle down, know his players inside out,” Sehwag said

Sehwag went on to add that the newly appointed skipper has to be more supportive and comfort the out-of-touch batsmen or bowlers. He also noted how the senior overseas members of the squad are not vocal on the field.

“But when a bowler is getting hammered, the captain shouldn’t say anything. He should only go and comfort him. This way he instills confidence in the bowler. The same goes for the struggling batsmen too. Even the foreign players in the RR dugout don’t seem to communicate so much within,” Sehwag concluded

Samson claimed in the post-match presentation that he enjoys captaining this group of players.

Rajasthan Royals, who are struggling with injuries and form, will now move to Delhi for their next run of fixtures. They will face the defending champions Mumbai Indians at the new venue.
